Image licences

Wikimedia Commons photographs

Most photographs are published by their authors on Wikimedia Commons under a Creative Commons licence. You will normally see CC BY 4.0 or CC BY-SA 4.0, which allow commercial use and adaptation as long as you give appropriate credit to the author and link to the licence. CC BY-SA images must keep the same licence if you redistribute them.

A small number of files are in the public domain, either because the author released them or because the copyright has expired. Those are marked as public domain on the detail page.

Free HD Wallpapers Licence

The original artwork published by Free HD Wallpapers — illustrated scenes, quote cards and abstract backgrounds — is released under the Free HD Wallpapers Licence. You may use it for personal and commercial purposes, including in apps, videos, prints and social posts.

You may not redistribute the source files as a stock library, resell the files themselves, or claim authorship of the artwork.

Checking an image

The detail page of every image lists the author, the licence and a link to the original source. If you need a clearer answer for a specific use, ask us and we will tell you exactly what that licence allows.
